Unique features of the first four acts include: four distinct geometrical proofs of the fundamentally important Global Gauss-Bonnet theorem, providing a stunning link between local geometry and global topology; a simple, geometrical proof of Gauss’s famous Theorema Egregium; a complete geometrical treatment of the Riemann curvature tensor of an n-manifold; and a detailed geometrical treatment of Einstein’s field equation, describing gravity as curved spacetime (General Relativity), together with its implications for gravitational waves, black holes, and cosmology. The final act elucidates such topics as the unification of all the integral theorems of vector calculus; the elegant reformulation of Maxwell’s equations of electromagnetism in terms of 2-forms; de Rham cohomology; differential geometry via Cartan’s method of moving frames; and the calculation of the Riemann tensor using curvature 2-forms. Six of the seven chapters of Act V can be read completely independently from the rest of the book. El conde de Glenthorn fallece dejando a su joven heredero su título y una enorme fortuna. El joven conde se entrega sin control a las diversiones y vicios de moda pero, incluso mientras disfruta de todos ellos, se siente permanentemente insatisfecho sin saber por qué. Hasta que la visita de Ellinor, la nodriza que lo crio, hace que vuelva a su Irlanda natal.

El conde vive muchas aventuras, tanto para llegar a su castillo en Irlanda como una vez instalado allí. El hecho de enfrentarse a situaciones que desconocía hasta ese momento hace que salga de su hastío, su ennui.

Ennui se publicó en el segundo volumen de una recopilación de textos titulada Tales of Fashionable Life, que se publicaron entre 1809 y 1812. El segundo volumen fue particularmente bien recibido en Inglaterra, lo que convirtió a Edgeworth en la novelista de mayor éxito comercial durante la primera década del siglo XIX e hizo que se la considerara una de las grandes escritoras contemporáneas, al nivel de Jane Austen. La propia Austen se contaba entre sus admiradores, así como Byron, Stendhal, Turgenev, Trollope, Thackeray y, al menos de su novela Castle Rackrent, el rey Jorge III. Sus novelas rebosan una aguda preocupación por las injusticias de su tiempo, además de ingenio, amor, personajes creíbles y una profunda comprensión por el comportamiento del ser humano.

Libro de texto, que a pesar de ser una 5ª ed en inglés, es una novedad editorial en nuestro portfolio, ya que viene a cubrir la asignatura de farmacología básica en el grado de medicina, ofreciendo una visión concisa y estructurada de los principios básicos de la disciplina con un enfoque altamente visual ( más de 150 dibujos esquemáticos acompañados de explicaciones muy detalladas) Se estructura en 7 grandes secciones; en la primera sección se abordan de una forma muy general los principios de los mecanismos de acción de los fármacos; es decir su absorción, distribución, metabolismo y excreción. En el resto de las secciones se tratan aspectos más concretos acerca de cómo actúan los fármacos ante las enfermedades. Así, desde la Sección II a la VI, se repasan los principales tipos de fármacos agrupados en función del sistema sobre el que actuan ( renal, muscular, nervioso..). Finalmente, la última sección se dedica a un resumen de los fármacos antivirales, antibacterianos, antifúngicos así como a los inmunomoduladores y a los utilizados contra el cáncer. Los capítulos son altamente homogéneos; cada uno de ellos se inicia con un cuadro clasificatorio de los fármacos tratados y se cierra con un resumen de los puntos más relevantes tratados en el capítulo así como con unas preguntas de autoevaluación en las que se ofrecen 5 opciones de respuesta. Las respuestas correctas junto a un breve razonamiento se encuentran al final del libro. El texto es altamente didáctico, ya que utiliza negritas para resaltar los términos más relevantes y un gran número de tablas que reunen las características más importantes de los fármacos tratados. Así mismo a lolargo del texto se incluyen numerosos cuadros de texto facilmente distinguibles por su fondo azul claro en el que se amplia información sobre mecanismos de acción farmacológica o bien se plantea un caso clínico. La obra ofrece acceso a SC.com (contenido integramente en inglés) en el que se incluye un banco de 150 preguntas con 5 opciones de respuesta (se incluye breve razonamiento tanto de la opción correcta como de las incorrectas) y a un conjunto de 15 videos. A pesar de ser un libro destinado al estudiante de Medicina y por tanto con un nivel básico, se han omitido deliberadamente todos los nombres comerciales, dejando únicamente el nombre de los correspondientes principios activos.
